The Mediterranean diet is focused on plant-based foods like
fruits and vegetables, potatoes, whole grains, beans, nuts,
seeds, and extra virgin olive oil. The diet also includes moderate
amounts of lean poultry, fish, seafood, dairy, and eggs, with
avoidance of fried foods, sweets, red meats, and white flour
products.

Over the seven-year follow-up, in patients with coronary heart
disease, the Mediterranean diet was superior to the low-fat diet
in preventing a major cardiovascular event, with a decrease
in HR of 26%. In men, this was even higher with a 33%
reduction in MACE. When evaluating patient subgroups, the
Mediterranean diet was superior to the low-fat diet in patients
without a family history of coronary heart disease, in those
without hypertension at baseline, in those younger than age 70
years at study entry, those with an LDL cholesterol lower than
80% to the assigned diet throughout the study.
